Gum Disease Treatment – Tyler, TX

Give Your Smile a Healthy Home

Keeping your teeth not just healthy and functional, but beautiful is important. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t take your gum health just as seriously. Without healthy gums, your teeth won’t stay healthy for very long. It’s precisely why at-home care and professional prevention at our office are so important for your long-term oral health. Thankfully, even severe gum disease can be treated and managed by our team at Shiloh Family Dental, so don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have tender, sensitive, or inflamed gums.

Why Choose Shiloh Family Dental for Gum Disease Treatment?

Scaling & Root Planing

To treat advanced gum disease, or periodontitis, we need to perform a deep cleaning procedure that goes further than basic preventive cleanings. This includes scaling, which involves removal of plaque and tartar (a calcified plaque) from above and beneath the gum line. We also perform root planing, which works to smooth out the tooth roots so they can begin reattaching to the gum tissue. Both lower the risk of reinfection later and generally need to be performed over multiple visits.

Antibiotic Therapy

Once the deep cleaning portion of your treatment is completed, we can begin antibiotic therapy to promote additional healing of your gum tissue. We place the antibiotics directly in between your teeth where deep pockets have formed due to the gum disease. The deeper they become, the easier it is for plaque to get trapped and damage your gums. When antibiotics are there to counter harmful bacteria, we can prevent your gums from becoming reinfected. Keep in mind that while this therapy is common for advanced gum disease, it is not always utilized.
