Frequently Asked Dental Questions - Tyler, TX

Got a Question? Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

If you need help confirming if a specific treatment is right for you, you don’t know how often you should visit for a checkup, or you aren’t sure what to do during a dental emergency, you’re not the only one. In fact, many people have questions when it comes to dentistry and our team is ready to answer them to the fullest extent. Whether it’s your fifth visit or your 50th, you deserve to be informed when it comes to your dental services.

How often should routine checkups be completed?

Our office recommends visiting for a dental exam and cleaning every six months at minimum. Not only is this the best method for confirming the effectiveness of your at-home care, but you can dramatically reduce your risk of dental disease. Exams help us catch underlying conditions before they turn serious and professional cleanings make sure the hard-to-reach areas of the mouth remain clean and free of plaque and tartar.

What’s the best way to replace teeth?

At our practice, we provide multiple solutions to replace missing teeth. This includes dental bridges and removable dentures. However, we also place and restore dental implants entirely in-house. It’s true that bridges and dentures tend to be more affordable, but dental implants are a better long-term investment overall. For this reason, you’ll find that we tend to recommend dental implants more often.

My gums hurt. How can I treat them?

When gum disease develops and becomes moderate to severe, it will not get better on its own. In order to treat gums that are tender, swollen, or inflamed, we need to perform scaling and root planing therapy. To complement your deep cleaning treatment, we’ll also perform antibiotic therapy in most cases. Antibiotic therapy promotes healing and reduces the risk of reinfection later.

I have tooth pain. What’s the best way to treat it?

While treatment for your tooth pain will largely depend on what’s causing the discomfort as well as the severity, you should always start by giving us a call to schedule an emergency appointment. Treatment could be done either through a dental cleaning and placement of a filling, root canal therapy, or extraction if the tooth is beyond salvageable. No matter what, our highest priority will be getting you out of pain.

Can I visit for an emergency appointment?

You sure can. In fact, the sooner you get to our office, the better. Dental emergencies do not get better on their own and treating it now is the best thing you can do for your long-term oral health. We will do whatever possible to get you seen at our office, ideally the same day, when an emergency occurs. We can even provide same-day crowns and sedation dentistry should you feel nervous about your visit.

Are dentists able to treat sleep apnea therapy?

If you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (or OSA), our dentists are happy to work with you in building a treatment plan that addresses this common, yet often undiagnosed condition. To do this, we make use of digital impression technology to design your future oral appliance. This custom-made device works to reposition your jaw and make it easier for air to flow into the mouth and lungs during sleep. To improve the quality of your diagnosis, we also provide at-home sleep testing.

How can you make my smile more attractive?

If you want to make your smile truly pop, we have multiple cosmetic improvements you can take advantage of at Shiloh Family Dental. For example, our porcelain veneers, metal-free restorations, and in-office/take-home whitening treatments and direct bonding can address many different imperfections. To learn how to get started on your smile makeover, you only need to give us a call. We can even show a preview of your smile using our digital imaging/virtual smile design technology.
